Nothing can compare to the fairytales Granny tells. And one day she was telling one such fabulous tale to her bunch of grandchildren; “Once upon a time there was a mother-tree....”- it was a story about a tree that lost her child! This story begins from the tiny Shimultoli village somewhere in Bangladesh. And from that Shimultoli’s narrow path to its trees and herbs, birds, rivers, worms, frogs, bats, foxes –none was left out from this story. Neither was the human beings left out. The stars, the sun and the moon, the clouds, the butterflies and the earth, all were equal in Granny’s story. Written by, once a Dhaka Theatre and ‘Gram’ Theatre activist, and a child rights specialist, Mohammad Maruf Khan, and through the illustrations of Chandrashekhor Dey, the innocent human child and the nature seem to come to life in this very story. It seemed as if one small village of Bangladesh had transformed into the whole universe! The story is translated in English by Antara Raisa.

On February 21, 1952, the Language Movement demanding Bangla as a state language of Pakistan came to a head. The government clamped down Section 144, banning the assembly of four or more persons. Students were determined to violate the order and, since the morning of February 21, started gathering on the campus of the University of Dhaka. When the small groups emerged on to the main road, the police tried to restrain them, initially by a lathi-charge and tear gas and then by shooting. Six people died on the spot. Kamal`s Ekushey narrates the incidents of the day through the eyes of a small boy. Kamal and his friends do not see the actual shooting - though they hear the shots. The significance of the day will remain with Kamal - a point made by Professor Rafiqul Islam in the last sentence of the story added by him. Professor Islam`s photographs of the day have also been used to illustrate the book.

None of the books of this series is meant for texts. These are pre-text books with words and pictures for the children to see, read and colour with pleasure at their sweet will. We hope that by playing with the books mental horizons of thinking and imagination of the children will be expanding.
